Lincolnshire has a reputation for being flat but one visit to the expansive rolling chalk hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds, the highest spot in eastern England, will prove otherwise.

Lincolnshire is one of Great Britain’s unspoilt landscapes. The main city, Lincoln, bursts with historic charm and the cathedral dominates the skyline for miles around. Recognised as one of the finest buildings in Europe with parts dating from 1072 it is now the third biggest cathedral in Britain but until 1549 was the tallest building in the world.

The city has a wealth of history from the towering cathedral to the castle, which over the last 10 years has undergone a huge £22 million renovation making it a World class destination where Magna Carta is now housed in a special state of the art vault to celebrate it’s 800th anniversary,(revealed April 2015). The auditorium features a series of films, projected onto a curved 180 degree screen which will immerse visitors in medieval battles and momentous occasions in the history of liberty and justice. The Victorian prison has been re furbished and will house the archaeology found in all the work that went on and the original medieval wall circuit has been re- created.

The Humber estuary is to the north of the county and The Wash is to the south providing a varied coastline for more than 50 miles which includes miles and miles of award winning golden sandy beaches from Cleethorpes to Skegness.

The coast is only 10 miles away and can provide a secluded, quiet nature walk with sand castle building and paddling or even surfing (see Sandilands/Sutton on Sea) or a traditional fish and chips/ amusement arcades kind of day (see Skegness/Mablethorpe/Cleethorpes). There are many very secluded sandy beaches too numerous to mention here but all easily accessible. Childrens activities – There are a whole host of entertainment options for children and we can only really brush the surface here but suffice to say there are farms seal sanctuarys, a steam railway 25 minutes away and Skegness is only 20 minutes away for family fun including day trips to Butlins. For little ones with energy to spare try soft adventure play area Kids World in Skegness. Natureland also in Skegness has fun for all the family with feeding times throughout the day for their various animals including seals, penguins and meercats to name but a few! A special mention must be given here to Woodside Falconry where you will find rescued wolves…and tigers! Various shows go on throughout the day and it’s a family favourite for us.

Bomber County is a name attributed to Lincolnshire due to its association with the Lancaster bomber squadrons based here in the 2nd world war. The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre is based on an original WW2 airfield and features the Just Jane Lancaster bomber that although not air worthy makes an immensely impressive show when it taxies on the runway.
